For you who is starting up, wish to start up or is simply interested in the idea of a start up - I'd recommend Guy Kawasaki's The Art of the Start as a must read. His advice is practical and compelling. Reading his book simply gets you going.
I've been trying to follow his advice too. My friend and I plan to make these fun products. And each time, we pause and think about systems and the larger, vaguer scheme of things - we tend to get slightly disheartened by the lack of clarity. We wonder if it's unique enough. Question the path-breakingness of the idea and what not.
And then, we look at each other, smile and say - Screw it! .. let's make our first batch. The rest we will figure.
Let's Start.
Guy mentions right up, to not get caught up in making business plans, documents etc.
Therefore, prototyping is essential, shipping a good enough product is okay to begin with. And in every case, the selling is important. Not the strategy of selling.
He ends with this wise nugget, "It's not how great you start - it's how great you end up."
I will remember.
